STUDIO TWO SHOT OF ANCHORS
SUPER IN CG OF ANCHOR NAMES |
ANCHOR OPENING - ANCHOR 1: |
Hello, and welcome to “Business World
News.”
When it comes to the computer and it’s
impact on our lives, no one can dispute how pervasive the
computer has become both at work and at home. But there’s
a downside. Some call it Computer Fatigue, or Doctors
treating it call it Repetitive Strain Injury, but most of
us of heard of it as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. It’s not a
disease because no clinical cause has been found so it is
called a syndrome, an ailment that, for those afflicted,
is at best uncomfortable and for millions, downright
painful.

ANCHOR 2: |
Many a false prophet has emerged to claim
a cure or relief from this affliction. From creams to
braces, the quick fix schemes have flooded the market. In
this segment we take a look at the extent of this disease
and how clinicians, who specialize in how the mechanics of
the body work, identified the cause before they came up
with a real solution.
REPORTER ‘Timberly Whitfield’ is on the
road in Roslyn, New York with this report.

There are many products on the market
claiming to have a quick fix through the use of creams or
braces…but only one has found an “at the computer”
solution” for people who use computers extensively.

It’s called the “Quill mouse”
Designer Appliances, the makers of the
Quill mouse have researched the human mechanics, called
biomechanics, of mouse usage and now understand why using
a computer mouse causes what they call “Mechanical Onset
R-S-I”.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and R-S-I is more
prevalent than we might think. Call it a “macho factor”,
but only 40% of those exhibiting symptoms actually see a
doctor. They see it as a weakness within themselves,
rather than a limitation in the tools they use. Some even
say they’re worried that if they admit it, or give in to
it, they might loose their jobs.

Understanding is the key. We are
mechanical beings and like our cars, we wear out. MoRSI is
not an affliction of the weak but rather a decay caused by
an imbalance. The muscles involved may be small, but
consequences can be huge. Unfortunately for most of us who
use a computer, it may be inevitable.

“The lesson here is in the recognition of
the fact that many people over a working year grip with
over 750 tons of force, click over 2,000,000 times and
travel 63 miles over their, mouse mat. This is an enormous
physical burden year in and year out and mouse usage is
now suggested to cause fatigue or RSI symptoms within 3
years. Research in the US and in Europe has now shown
this.

We developed software that does most of
the clicking for you, making the worlds first virtually
hands free mousing system. It even a click counter built
in so people can see just how many times a day they click
there mouse buttons, most people would be shocked to
realize they typically click 3,000 – 5,000 and even up to
10,000 times a day.”

There are a number of recent scientific
publications that now show that repetitive use of a
computer mouse can result in traumatic nerve damage.
One U.S. based study showed that 50% of
users will have symptoms of this within 3 years (young
people in their twenties).”
The biomechanical design of the Quill
ensures its users reduce their risk of Carpal Tunnel and
similar ailments by removing what are now known to be the
causal issues. Excessive mechanical wear of the fingers
and hand.

Designer Appliances says its technology
provides their users with “Active Protection” everyday and
on every use. The company says their products benefits
their users without them even realizing. Since “Quill”
users do not have to make any modifications to their
activities, the company believes the “Quill” will be a
truly pervasive and enabling technology that is actively
being taken up by major US corporations and government
departments.

“Until now The scientific community has
never made specific studies as to why we get RSI and we
have only heard from the Doctors who report the
consequences, which are the ailments that people suffer
from when they have got it. This is why manufacturers have
been able to exploit the term ‘ergonomic’ to sell products
without having to justify why they are better.

REPORTER VO: |
Although there is no cure for RSI or CTS,
it is possible to alleviate the pain and discomfort. And
according to Tom Large, the Quill mouse may even prevent
it.
|
CU OF USER USING QUILL |
TOM : |
It’s true there is no cure it but it will
remove the mechanical load on you arm which will stop it
getting any worse and should allow the arm to start to
heal itself to the extent that it can. Almost all Quill
users report the ability to work on their computer without
the pain they are used to. Others notice that they have
less pain away from the computer. Our belief is that
virtually all people get this benefit but it does not
occur to them to notice something that isn’t there
anymore, just like after visiting the dentist you do not
notice that you no longer have a tooth ache.
|
MED CLOSE UP OF REPORTER |
REPORTER STANDUP |
Gripping and clicking a mouse all day
while in a static posture lowers oxygen levels in the hand
tissues and causes an imbalance between the muscles that
open and close the hand. The muscles involved in closing
the hand get overworked and the muscles used for opening
the hand therefore become underdeveloped. This in turn,
reduces blood flow to the hand and leads to pain. Tom
Large says the mechanics involved are simple but the human
consequence is severe.
|
CUT TO TWO SHOT OF REPORTER AND TOM |
TOM : |
(please shorten this answer) **
“Without going into the details of the
biochemistry of muscles; if you’re sitting still your
heart is beating at its resting pace and you breath
slowly. But your hands are very busy using muscles that
burning up more oxygen than is being delivered to them.
This is what causes the fatigue people feel in their
hands, which over a long time damages the tissues and
muscles of the hand become due to toxins that build up.
This is the start of clinical symptoms of RSI. With Quill
mouse your circulation is not restricted because your
wrists are untwisted and your finger muscles are not
gripping so do not use more oxygen than can be delivered.
Consequently they stay in an aerobic state. Quill Mouse is
the only “AEROBIC MOUSE”.
Gripping and clicking a mouse all day only
exercises the muscles on the inside of the fingers that
close the hand. The finger opening muscles are therefore
under developed in relative terms. This means that the
normally resting position of the mousing hand is for the
fingers to be more curled or clawed.
This cause pain and reduces blood flow as
it causes constrictions. So we can predict that certain
muscles doing this amount of work will become more
developed and so cause tension that leads to wear and
eventual failure. The mechanics are simple the human
consequence is most severe. Add to that software that
means you no longer have to click or grip and a mouse mat
that is matched to the feet of the mouse for even lower
friction and you have the only mousing system that removes
the majority of the effort and strain in mousing.

|
REPORTER VO: |
Tom Large believes this device will make
an impact that spans farther than the corporate office.
It’s his hope that the Quill will be a benefit to
Insurance companies and even be recognized by Legislators.
|
CU OF TOM DISSOLVE TO SHOT
OF CAPITAL HILL THEN CUSTOMER USING QUILL |
TOM: |
Until now the only way to remove the risk
was to remove the mouse. This is obviously not as easy as
it was to remove the corporate ashtrays, but this has as
much impact and possibly a greater cost than smoking in
the office did. We believe at this time we are the only
credible alternative to introducing protective legislation
that would dramatically reduce the time employees were
allowed to use computers, such as in Holland for instance
where by law they have to switch off after 6 hours of use.
We are confident therefore that as we become established
in the market place we will remove any perceived need for
government intervention and by working with Insurance
companies we’ll help accelerate the benefits we bring into
their corporate client base.

Almost all Quill users report the ability
to work on their computer without the pain. Others notice
that they have less pain when they are away from the

The Quill Mouse system not only benefits
those at risk of disablement by computer use but also
enables those with hand disabilities such as Arthritis. It
is being taken up by the Assitive Technology Sector as it
is the only mouse registered on the US Government’s
Section 508 Accessible technology site as not causing
pinching, twisting or excessive grip and therefore
enabling technology for those who have hand disabilities.

STAND UP |
REPORTER STANDUP: |
Even President Bush has said that in
relation to Office Ergonomics issues, this industry must
sort out its own problems, and it seems it took a new
player to the industry to help make this happen.
It is estimated that there are 5,000,000
people afflicted with RSI in the US alone and this figure
rises by 250,000 a year. Think about it, there are
100,000,000 plus computer users here in the US and the
next generation is getting ready for college, many of
which will likely be suffers.
