ANCHOR ONE:

Welcome to a Special Edition of Business World News. I'm Carlos Amezcua.

ANCHOR TWO:

And I'm Marti Johnson. We go on locations around the world and behind closed doors to show you what some companies are doing to improve the quality of life for their customers.

ANCHOR ONE:

From time to time, we discover a news story that is so important that we devote an entire show to it. Today we have such a story.

ANCHOR TWO:

Recently, there has been quite a stir in the health industry over the mangosteen, a tropical fruit purporting to have amazing health properties. Scientists have lately unlocked the secrets behind the mangosteen fruit, substances called xanthones. These rare substances may be the most important health discovery in recent years.

ANCHOR ONE:

In this Special Edition of Business World News, we'll show you the fascinating history of the mangosteen fruit, the health benefits of xanthones, and a story about a remarkable company that is bringing this new health product to market.

Let us now go to the native lands of the extraordinary mangosteen.

But of all the treasures of the orient, a small, unassuming fruit has to be one of the most sought after, most highly prized botanicals. Known as the mangosteen, it is both truly delicious to eat and highly revered for its extraordinary health benefits.

MAP OF SOUTH EAST ASIA

REPORTER AAA:

(vo)

Native to the tropical regions of South East Asia, the mangosteen can be found in Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, India, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. While it is quite well known and cultivated in that part of the world, it is relatively unknown in North America and Europe.

For centuries, the people, and others, of South East Asia have enjoyed the juicy inner pulp of the mangosteen fruit, a taste that is both sweet and slightly tangy.

SHOTS OF HISTORICAL PHOTOS

REPORTER AAA:

(vo)

Until recently, the mangosteen has been hidden from the rest of the world. Although many European explorers in the 1700s were familiar with it, it was generally unknown to the people back home. The mangosteen requires ripening on the tree, making it difficult to transport as it spoils quickly. Legend has it that Queen Victoria offered knighthood to anyone who could bring her fresh mangosteen, an honor that went unfulfilled.

In the 1930s the famous American botanist and explorer David Fairchild brought the attention of the mangosteen to the United States. He wrote in his book, Exploring for Plants: "It is so delicate that it melts in the mouth like ice cream. The flavor is quite indescribably delicious. There is nothing to mar the perfection of this fruit"

Yet, the truly remarkable part of the fruit is found in the outer rind, or the pericarp. Unlike the pearl-colored juicy inner pulp, the purplish rind is bitter tasting, but highly curative. Asian folk doctors use this part of the fruit to treat a wide variety of ailments, from upset stomachs to malaria.

JOE MORTON TRAVEL SHOTS, WALKING IN JUNGLE

REPORTER AAA:

(vo)

In the mid 1990s, businessman Joe Morton, while traveling throughout South East Asia, discovered the mangosteen fruit for himself, and soon became intrigued with what he was hearing about it.

INTERVIEW WITH JOE MORTON

JOE MORTON:

** Joe talks about his world travels and his visit to South East Asia

** How the locals told him about mangosteen, how they called it the queen of fruit (from Queen Victoria)

** How he studied and learned of the folklore of the fruit; that the people would use the peel to make teas to cure stomach problems or they would make a poultice for skin conditions.

** Joe talks about how he feels that he discovered something truly remarkable.

REPORTER AAA:

(vo)

For generations, traditional healers in Asia have relied on the mangosteen as an essential ingredient for their natural remedies. The rind is sliced, dried, powdered, boiled, and made into teas, ointments, and poultices.

Taken internally it is used to treat dysentery, chronic diarrhea, bronchitis, tuberculosis, thrush, cholera, influenza, syphilis, gonorrhea, gleets, malaria, cystitis, urinary disorders, worm infestation, fatigue, and more.

Used externally its reported to treat parasites, eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis, and other skin disorders. It promotes the healing of bruising, wounds, and rashes; reduces fevers and lessens infection.

In fact, the mangosteen fruit could be described as having all the benefits of a medicine cabinet, in a compact natural package.

INTERVIEW DAVID A. MORTON, PH.D.

DAVID MORTON:

** Talks about the wealth of research behind the mangosteen

** Primary research showed mangosteen to be an anti-inflammatory

** He tells us why this is important

** He tells us additional research shows that the mangosteen has a wide variety of applications

SHOTS OF RESEARCH PAPERS.

REPORTER AAA:

(vo)

For decades, researchers have documented that the mangosteen fruit is truly outstanding for its curative properties. More than 60(?) research papers have been published in scientific journals about mangosteen. Over 138 health benefits have been cataloged so far, and the list is growing yearly. As the evidence of its health properties mount, some are claiming that the mangosteen fruit may be the most nutritionally packed food supplement ever discovered.

INTERVIEW JOE MORTON

JOE MORTON:

** We are just beginning to understand how important it is

** It is astounding that with all this documented research on the mangosteen that no one had really done much with it before now

With all the research and history aside, the humble mangosteen fruit goes quietly on, ignorant of its title of Queen of Fruits. Heralded by thousands throughout South East Asia, the mangosteen is both a mouthwatering delicacy and the premiere remedy for a wide variety of health complaints.

Those who relay on its natural benefits may not know how or why the little mangosteen cures so many ailments all they know is it does.

For Business World News, I'm AAA reporting.

ANCHORS IN STUDIO

ANCHOR ONE:

Our science reporter BBB continues the mangosteen story as he unravels the hidden mysteries of this significant fruit and explains the scientific reasons why mangosteen is well on it's way to revolutionizing the health supplement industry.

(standup in laboratory)

Treasured for generations, the people of South East Asia highly value the mangosteen fruit for its healing properties. The mangosteen fruit, however, has been, until recently, overlooked by the Western world despite its long history and popularity as a folk remedy in Asia.

VIDEO

REPORTER BBB:

(vo)

It has been one of Nature's best-kept secrets. Now science has unlocked the mysteries of this remarkable fruit identifying many of the major compounds that are responsible for its healthful characteristics.

VIDEO

REPORTER BBB:

(vo)

The fruit of the mangosteen, scientifically known as Garcinia mangostana, contains an outer rind or pericarp, and an inner pulp called the mesocarp. The mesocarp divides into juicy seed-bearing sections, the sweet part of the fruit, which most people eat.

VIDEO

REPORTER BBB:

(vo)

However, it is the bitter-tasting paricarp that is used in traditional medicines with amazing results. For decades researchers have analyzed the mangosteen paricarp and have determined that in addition to several key vitamins and minerals, the cellular fibers of the fruit contain many other biologically active substances such as polyphenols, polysaccharides, cathechines, anthocyanins, and high concentrations of class of chemical compounds known as xanthones.

REPORTER BBB:

(vo)

It is these xanthones that are causing a lot of excitement in the scientific community. Xanthones are a unique type of phytonutrients that are neither vitamins nor minerals but a separate class of chemical substances found in the skins of fruits and vegetables. They are primarily responsible for color, hue, scent, and flavor. Over 200 xanthones exist in nature. But incredibly, about 40, or 20% of all xanthones are contained in the mangosteen fruit. No other single food source has been found to have this high a concentration of these amazing substances.

Dr. J. Frederic Templeman is a board-certified physician and a leading expert on xanthones and phytonutrients.

INTERVIEW DR. J. FREDERIC TEMPLEMAN

DR. TEMPLEMAN:

** Talks about the general study and science of mangosteen and xanthones

** Unlike most medicinal plants, the phytoceuticals of the mangosteen have been widely studied by medical and pharmacological researchers

** The biological active components have been rigorously examined in the laboratory

** It is evident that the multiple health benefits of the fruit are supported by scientific investigation, etc.

Xanthones are a biologically active group of molecules comprising a six-carbon ringed structure. The double carbon bonds make the xanthone very stable. Each type of xanthone uses this same backbone, but contain unique side chains that perform specific functions. These side chains make the xanthone extremely versatile, changing the chemical activity for specific tasks. For example, three of the most studied mangosteen xanthones are: alpha-mangostin, which acts as an antioxidant; gamma-mangostin, which acts as an anti-inflammatory; and Garcinone E, which acts as an anti-tumor agent.

Rusty metal pieces

REPORTER BBB:

(vo)

Xanthones are powerful antioxidants. In the body, oxidation occurs when free radical molecules attack cells, often damaging them beyond repair. Free radicals invade the body through pollution, infection, poor nutrition, stress, and radiation. Oxidation is the cause of many diseases, including cancer, but is also responsible for the aging process itself.

     ***

Oxidation of metal produces rust, and oxidation within the human body is a process that is just as destructive.

REPORTER BBB:

(vo)

Nutritional antioxidants are essential in the fight of free radical oxidation. Some of the most popular antioxidants are vitamins C and E. But scientists have discovered that xanthone antioxidants are more potent than vitamins and therefore better at fighting free radicals and preventing cell damage.

For many years it has been known that rust can be prevented in iron or steel by attaching a zinc anode to critical structures.  The zinc oxidizes more easily, thus protecting the host metal. By this same process xanthone antioxidants absorb oxidation in the body and protect it.

Xanthones also possess powerful anti-inflammatory properties. Inflammation is the body's normal reaction to almost any injury, manifesting itself with heat, swelling, redness, and pain. According to a Time Magazine article, chronic inflammation, if not corrected, has been linked to cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and inflammatory bowel syndrome, to name a few.

REPORTER BBB: STANDUP IN LAB

Some xanthones inhibits the production of the enzyme cyclooxygenase or COX, which in turn inhibits prostaglandins, fatty acids that control muscle contraction and swelling, in effect controlling inflammation.

In addition, major pharmacological studies have uncovered even more healing properties of xanthones including:

** Antitumor and cancer preventative

** Hypoglycemic , lowers blood sugar levels

** Antidiabetic

** Antilipidemic , lowers blood fat

** Antiobesity , helps with weight loss

** Antibiotic , prevents or moderates bacterial infections

** Antifungal , prevents or moderates fungal infections

** Antiarthritic , helps prevent arthritis

It is unlikely that xanthones will be available as independent supplements. However scientists anticipate that in the future new drugs will be developed using xanthones as models. Right now, the best way to get xanthones is in a natural food source, or a whole-food supplement.

INTERVIEW DR. OR SCIENTIST

INTERVIEWEE:

** We know that xanthones are an integral part of good nutrition, but they don't stand alone

** Other factors need to be considered, vitamins, exercise, good nutrition

** Taking a whole food supplements instead of medicines offer a greater freedom to health

** People can eat whatever food they wish** Mangosteen is a food, but what a food!

With natural food supplements all the elements of the plant are used together. This is known as holistic nourishment. Manmade drugs on the other hand are created with specific physiological functions in mind, with high potency of very few elements. In edible plants, rarely is any single ingredient present in sufficient strength or quantity to cause harm. Medicinal preparations from plants are rarely dangerous, while most drugs have hazardous side effects.

Plant preparations are also effective because of the synergy of their elements. The ingredients act together to produce a much greater effect than they could do on their own. Many of the benefits of mangosteen can only be explained by synergy, a phenomenon science cannot fully explain.

INTERVIEW DR. OR SCIENTIST

David Morton

INTERVIEWEE:

** Synergy is how the immune systems of plants and animals work

Mangosteen preparations have undergone rigorous toxicity studies in recent years with no adverse effects. In addition, centuries of recorded folk medicine show no warnings associated with mangosteen's use, even though warnings are common with other medicinal plants. All this indicates that the mangosteen is quite safe to use as a nutritional supplement.

Many scientists and medical doctors now consider supplements an essential part of good health. However, deciding which supplement to use is challenging since thousands of products are available, many with questionable claims. Consumers need to be selective in choosing the most versatile, reliable, and the safest products. Research indicates that xanthones meet these requirements. Yet they are only found in sufficient quantities in the mangosteen fruit.

INTERVIEW DR. TEMPLEMAN

DR. TEMPLEMAN:

** In my opinion, the daily use of the mangosteen, with a good multivitamin and mineral supplement is the optimal choice for good health.

**Some really strong closing statement
