Until recently, the mangosteen has
been hidden from the rest of the world. Although many
European explorers in the 1700s were familiar with it,
it was generally unknown to the people back home. The
mangosteen requires ripening on the tree, making it
difficult to transport as it spoils quickly. Legend has
it that Queen Victoria offered knighthood to anyone who
could bring her fresh mangosteen, an honor that went
unfulfilled. |

In the 1930s the famous American
botanist and explorer David Fairchild brought the
attention of the mangosteen to the United States. He
wrote in his book, Exploring for Plants: "It is so
delicate that it melts in the mouth like ice cream. The
flavor is quite indescribably delicious. There is
nothing to mar the perfection of this fruit" |

Xanthones are a unique type of phytonutrients that are
neither vitamins nor minerals but a separate class of
chemical substances found in the skins of fruits and
vegetables. They are primarily responsible for color,
hue, scent, and flavor. Over 200 xanthones exist in
nature. But incredibly, about 40, or 20% of all
xanthones are contained in the mangosteen fruit. No
other single food source has been found to have this

Xanthones are a biologically active
group of molecules comprising a six-carbon ringed
structure. The double carbon bonds make the xanthone
very stable. Each type of xanthone uses this same
backbone, but contain unique side chains that perform
specific functions. These side chains make the xanthone
extremely versatile, changing the chemical activity for
specific tasks. For example, three of the most studied
mangosteen xanthones are: alpha-mangostin, which acts as
an antioxidant; gamma-mangostin, which acts as an
anti-inflammatory; and Garcinone E, which acts as an
anti-tumor agent. |

Rusty metal pieces

REPORTER BBB: |

Xanthones are powerful
antioxidants. In the body, oxidation occurs when free
radical molecules attack cells, often damaging them
beyond repair. Free radicals invade the body through
pollution, infection, poor nutrition, stress, and
radiation. Oxidation is the cause of many diseases,
including cancer, but is also responsible for the aging
process itself.

Nutritional antioxidants are
essential in the fight of free radical oxidation. Some
of the most popular antioxidants are vitamins C and E.
But scientists have discovered that xanthone
antioxidants are more potent than vitamins and therefore
better at fighting free radicals and preventing cell
damage.
For many years it has been known
that rust can be prevented in iron or steel by attaching
a zinc anode to critical structures. The zinc oxidizes
more easily, thus protecting the host metal. By this
same process xanthone antioxidants absorb oxidation in
the body and protect it. |

diseases, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and
